Trasmutazione
2022
My goal in Transmutation is to challenge the characteristic stiffness and heaviness typical of the mosaic, to the point of creating a light and mobile, almost immaterial mosaic.
There have been attempts in the past to give lightness to the mosaic, I emulating draperies and fabrics that are simply mere imitations on a rigid support, albeit visually impactful. Thanks to my experiments with fabric, in particular with the Shibori 3D technique, I created Transmutation, which breaks this pattern by going beyond tradition, rediscovering the soul of the tile, ethereal and light, leaving its mark on the world of matter.
The tile gets wrapped in a fabric, undergoes a steam based process, which shapes and imprints the shape of the tile on the textile fibers.
The tile gets removed and leaves its unique and unrepeatable imprint on what looks like a snakels sheath, a semi-transparent skin.
The Shibori gesture of “removing” is fundamental component in this work, as the production itself embodies the process of transmutation.
Duchamp with his Readymades has redefined the function of objects without however redefining the nature and function of their materials, in Transmutation I redefine the nature of the material without changing the function of the object, thus giving birth to the Shibori mosaics, a metaphor for life and its everchanging processes.
